3 and out: Raiders hang on to win in Miami

Marshawn Lynch returned from suspension and delivered two TD’s as the Oakland Raiders edged out the Dolphins 27-24 in Miami on Sunday night. Robert O’Reardon reports…

Carr Returns?

I wrote last week about the need for the Oakland Raiders to have Derek Carr back to his best so they could try and salvage their season. This was only one game but it appears he answered the call. 21 pass completions out of 30 and a touchdown pass helped win the game for his team as they moved into the second half of the season and their bye week with a 4-5 record.

The one blemish on his record in this game was the interception. Carr was trying to find Amari Cooper who has been in poor form this season and it ricocheted into the arms of a Miami Dolphins safety. A tad unlucky and a huge improvement on previous weeks, but a better team may have punished them in a similarly tight game.

Beastmode At Last

After a lot of fanfare in the summer and a solid start in weeks 1 & 2, Marshawn Lynch has not hit the heights many would have expected him to. He served a ban last week in Buffalo and was back this week with 57 yards on the ground which was all but 24 of the Raiders running yards in total.

The two touchdowns were the difference between another loss and a narrow win which keeps slim post season hopes alive.

Like with Carr, if he can replicate this form for the rest of the season, Oakland may have a chance to sneak into the wildcard round.

Where do the Raiders stand at bye-week?

Last season after 9 games the Raiders also went into the bye-week. They had just comprehensively beaten Denver in Oakland to move to 7-2 and they were almost certainly guarunteed post season football for the first time in over 10 years.

Now, they couldn’t be further from that. However, there are mitigating circumstances. The injury woes of Carr have been well document as he struggles to find consistency while Cooper looks a shadow of the receiver he was last season.

The defence is still yet to record an interception this season after nine games. Despite their failings last year, the defence still managed to turn the ball over with the efforts of Khalil Mack who has not been at a similar level.

There is lots to ponder for Oakland as they head to Mexico to face New England in a couple of weeks.

A gameball for….

Marshawn Lynch: his efforts on the ground with two touchdowns showed why Oakland took the gamble to sign him in the off season.
