DRAFT PREVIEW: Pick 16 – Baltimore Ravens

The mid-point of the 2017 Draft belongs to the Baltimore Ravens, who will be looking to improve after what was, for them, a rather lacklustre 2016.

Pick: 16

2016 Record: 8-8

What went right in 2016? Baltimore’s star was an unexpected one. Dennis Pitta, a player who, two years ago, thought he might never play again after a fractured hip refused to heal properly, was the top tight end in the NFL in 2016. The defense played their part, too, ranking sixth in the NFL overall.

And what went wrong? Pitta aside, the rest of the offense only really got going when the Ravens ditched offensive coordinator Mark Trestman. By then, it was too late to turn the season into anything other than the most average one in the NFL. After the season ended, the defense was dealt a blow when standout linebacker Zach Orr was forced to retire due to injury.

What do they need? Offensive Line, Wide Receiver, Defensive End, Defensive Back

Who will they pick? Whilst there might be a temptation to try to replace Orr in this round, the sensible choice is to look for a wide receiver who will give Joe Flacco more downfield options. The team cannot rely upon Pitta forever, after all. Clemson wideout Mike Williams will, likely as not, be off the board by now, so the next best option would be Corey Davis out of Western Michigan.
