Tampa had a good first season under Dirk Koettler and must now draft well in order to improve upon it.
2016 Record: 9-7
What went right in 2016? When you consider that Tampa had the first pick in 2015, a lot has gone right for them since then. Despite all of the gloomy predictions, Koettler’s first season as head coach was a successful one and his relationship with the mercurial Jameis Winston only got stronger during it. Wideout Mike Evans was the main beneficiary, surprising many by being the sixth ranked receiver in the NFL.
And what went wrong? Neither the offense nor the defense was brilliant, though. The former ranked only 18th, whilst the latter was a bottom ten unit. Whilst that is more due to a lack of depth of talent – and a new scheme under a more offensively minded head coach – than to anything going wrong, it is a problem that they will have to address here.
What do they need? Running Back, Defensive Line, Defensive Back
Who will they pick? In terms of needs, the defense probably just shades the offense. With that in mind, it seems more likely that they go for a defensive lineman than anything else. The best one of those left on the board by this point is likely to be Tennessee’s Derek Barnett.
